Southern French Grenache, but not as you know it

Katie Jones moved from her native UK to the South of France 20 years ago, and set up Domaine Jones in 2008. To say Katie looks for vineyards no-one else wants would only be a slight exaggeration. Most other growers in the area wouldn’t be interested in her modest twelve hectares of vines spread across vineyards in Maury (her first), Paziols and Tuchan. The sites are too small, too remote and too much like hard work.

This is Grenache but not as you know it. Made from Lledoner Pelut vines – a rare Grenache mutation also known as Hairy Grenache thanks to it’s furry leaves. The grapes come from a vineyard of 70 – 80 year old vines, just outside the village of Tuchan in the lieu-dit Rebouls.  With notes of black cherry, raspberry and strawberry, this wine is silky smooth and has soft tannins.
