The Risk Takers, Clos du Jaugueyron

Bordeaux, but not as you may know it

Michel and Stéphanie Théron attended a trade event in March 2019 in London called Bordeaux The Risk Takers, which was designed to showcase the untold story of Bordeaux. To introduce the pioneers and mavericks who express their terroir with authenticity and respect for their land; a break-away from the glitz and gloss of Bordeaux’s recent past. It was pitched as an opportunity to meet the vignerons who are redefining the region, who take risks and dare to be different. Michel and Stéphanie were so enthused by the event, that they went away and decided to make a cuvee in honour of the concept. Hence – The Risk Takers.

Their intention was to make a much more ‘digeste’ wine – meaning a wine that slips easily down the throat – considered to be mission impossible with Bordeaux varieties and climate. The wine is made of 50% Merlot and 50% Petit Verdot, and it’s vinified using a very rare method called ‘flotation’. The Petit Verdot grapes are pressed as normal, but then the Merlot is added as ‘free run juice’. The result is a wine which is much lighter and fruit forward than you might expect from Bordeaux, with notes of fresh red fruit and a touch of mint.
